Glimpses of Easter

We have spent Easter with Lauren and Adam in Inman, Kansas. We arrived on Saturday afternoon, and immediately went with Lauren for lunch at a delicious barbecue restaurant in Hutchinson called Danny Boys. This place was like heaven for Nathan because they offer at least 20 different sauces to try with the meat, and Nathan loves variety! After lunch, Lauren and I dragged Nathan to the Hutch mall to find him a nice Easter outfit. This was not Nathan's idea of heaven, and he probably felt a bit bullied as we dragged him from rack to rack and forced him to try on multiple items of clothing. We succeeded though, and he looked pretty stellar for the celebration of Jesus's resurrection the next morning! For a late dinner, we went (with Adam as well) to a new Italian restaurant in McPherson which was delish.

We woke up soooo early on Easter morning since the church service at Groveland Christian Church began at 7 am (6 am Colorado time). They did, however, serve us a wonderful breakfast after the service! We took a few snapshots of the four of us after breakfast and then headed home for a badly needed nap. A couple of hours later, we awoke and headed to Adam's family's home for Easter lunch, where we ate some more delicious food and spent time exploring the farm. Adam and his father are both farmers. Farm life is foreign to me so it was quite an education to sit in the combine, ride the four-wheeler, traipse through the barn, and visit baby calves. I don't even know how long it has been since I have heard a real cow mooing. That evening, Lauren and I made another late dinner and we all sat around and watched Big Brother.

Monday morning was relaxing. Lauren and Adam (sadly) attended a funeral so Nathan and I were on our own for a while. We sat around in the morning and then headed to Danny Boys for a repeat of the tasty lunch on Saturday. When Lauren returned, she took Nathan and I to McPherson and we had coffee and walked around downtown. In the evening, Nathan and I went to visit a special friend, Kenneth. When Nathan lived in Kansas, he worked in a home for mentally disabled adults and became especially close with Kenny. When we have come to Kansas in the past, we have often discussed fitting in a visit with Kenny, but this was the first time we actually had the time! It was so great for me to be able to put a face to all the Kenny stories! Afterwards, we headed to Nate and Kendra's for drinks. It was such a nice visit and we returned to Lauren's house much later than we expected!

This morning Nathan and I have said our goodbyes and are getting read to pack up our belongings. After a final cuddle with the baby kittens, we will spend 8 hours in the car to return to Colorado and real life. But, happily, I still have some spring break left!

Aaaawwww!

Something happens to my camera when it gets too close to 2-week-old baby kittens. It just won't stop taking pictures. I absolutely have NO control over the camera! Honest. Here are a few of the shots....

A similar reaction occurs with my voice when I get near the baby kitty cats. It seems to (of it's very own accord) raise about an octave, and I can't stop myself from 'ooohing' and 'aaawing'! They are just too cute.

Road Trip- near Quinter, Kansas

On the way to Lauren and Adam's house, Nathan and I were playing an enlightening car game that involved answering complicated questions such as 'Would you rather sing a duet with Alicia Keys or Joss Stone?' and 'If you had to choose, which 80's band would you rather have been a member of- Journey or REO Speedwagon?'

So I ask Nathan, "Would you rather have to play back-up guitar for Miley Cyrus or Justin Timberlake?"

After quietly contemplating for a few seconds (Nathan takes these questions very seriously), he thoughtfully responds.

"As long as I wouldn't personally be responsible for 'bringing sexy back', I would have to choose Justin Timberlake."

A Wedding in Kansas

We flew from Boise to Wichita to attend a wedding. Conveniently, Nathan's sister, Lauren, lives 30 minutes from the wedding location so we were able to celebrate our Christmas with his family at her house this year.

Nathan's good friend (another one of those friends Nathan has had since he was six years old) got married yesterday. Nathan and Jay played the prelude and postlude music during the ceremony. The wedding was beautiful and simple. I don't know the couple well, but from what I have heard, it was a true reflection of their personalities. I wish I had pictures from the ceremony to post, but I was filming that with the video camera, so the only pictures I have are from the rehearsal, the reception and the "after party".

Reception and After Party-

Married to a Legend?
At the reception, I was standing in line for the restroom and began making conversation with the girl in front of me. I asked her how she knew the bride and groom. After explaining that Nate (the groom) was her professor at Bethel College and that she had been dating the bride, Kendra's, cousin for three years, she asked me how I knew the bride and groom. I told her that my husband was a friend of the groom and had been one of the guys to play the prelude music during the ceremony.

"What's your husband's name?" she asked, excitedly.

"Nathan Gillis," I responded.

"Oh, yeah! Everybody knows Nathan. He's a legend around here!"

"Really?" I tried to contain my surprise. (It's one thing when your husband's best friends tell you he was a legend in college. It's something else entirely when the stranger next to you in line for the ladies' room is telling you that your husband is a legend!)

"Is it because of his song?" I asked her. Nathan wrote a song in college called Sober and Saved. It's pretty popular among his friends.

"Well, yeah... and his band and just... everything! Everybody just knows about him. He's one of those students that everybody talks about."

I guess I did marry a legend!
