Last Day of Summer

Sadly, today was the last day of summer. It is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to the sight of my kitchen at noon, the opportunity to watch Oprah any day I want, making appointments without regard to time, being at home when the mail arrives, and wearing shorts. I somberly say hello to mornings so early that it's still dark outside, shorter evenings with too much to do and not enough time to do it, eating breakfast only on Saturday mornings, my "professional" attire, and going to bed early. This summer was way too short.

An Empty House

My family left yesterday morning and the house is so much emptier with them gone. Everything is calm and peaceful and it makes me a little sad! There is something beautiful about the constant sound of "kuddie" voices echoing through a home. The next time I'll see them is when they come for the wedding.

Colorado Springs Bridal Shower

My sister and mom threw a fantastic bridal shower while they were here. Sue hosted it. They did such a great job of coming up with fun games and making great "munchies!" It seemed like everybody had a very nice time and I was so happy to see my friends again! Thanks SO much to everybody who attended and thanks especially to my family and Sue for giving me a great party! Hopefully I will be able to post more pictures from the shower later and maybe even some video footage.

Unfortunately, one of my friends was in a car accident earlier in the day. Thankfully, she is okay but I know she would appreciate everybody's prayers as she and her husband try to deal with the hassle that an accident can cause. I am so sorry for her that it happened! :(

Dede

What I love most about Dede today is that, last night, she took advantage of being awake in the middle of the night for baby Bernie's 1:00 am feeding to travel half an hour each way to the closest bookstore. There, she purchased her copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Her love for Harry rivals my own. Back in Virginia, she even sped home from school after having purchased the third (maybe) Harry Potter book, reading in the car while she was driving. You can't beat that kind of anticipation. No matter how commercialized the books have become, I, like Dede, will always be impressed by the world of Harry Potter. This isn't another Harry Potter promo, but I cannot contain my enthusiasm and it's fun to have somebody in my life who doesn't think it's ridiculous!

Coming to Visit!

My family is coming to visit and I am very excited about it!!! My mom, sister (Andie), her daughter McKayla, and my nephew Zach are all going to make the trip out to Colorado. Zach's mom, Kate, was going to come but she is currently looking for a new job so it will be hard for her to be away. :( My hope is that it will be wedding central at my house for a week and that I will feel much better about the wedding plans in one week than I do right now. I'll be sure to post pictures while they are here. Zach and McKayla are much cuter than Nathan and I anyway!

Today I had lunch with the girls from work and I got to see Shannon's wedding album for the first time. It was very well done and it made me very excited about having one of my own!

My House

Here are a couple of pictures of the new place. One picture captures the essence of the large livingroom. The other is of the sun room/dining area.

Mennomeet

One of my bridesmaids, Becca, has a brother who recently got married. Brad and Jessica are an adorable Mennonite couple! Together they have set up a website to help other adorable Mennonites meet one another. I think it is a terrific idea and I'm not the least bit bitter that it came two years too late to help me out! So, if you want another on-line avenue to meet the person of your dreams (or just a Mennonite to hang out with), you should sign up. It's free.

Dancing

At our reception, Nathan and I definitely plan on having a dance. We are having fun talking about what songs should be played during the dance and we can't wait to hear some favorites in that setting- Footloose, Billie Jean, Loveshack, anything by KC and the Sunshine Band, etc. What we aren't sure about is the traditional reception dances and whether people love them or hate them. Dances such as the Macarena, the Electric Slide, the Chicken Dance, the Dollar Dance, a conga line, YMCA, etc. are met with some strong opinions sometimes. I'm lumping a bunch of different kinds of dances together, but I am curious what people think about any or all of them. Some comments I've heard are that these sorts of dances get more people on the dance floor, but others have been known to express strong dislike for some or ALL of these dances. What do you think?

Reception

Sue, Nathan, and I met with the Director of Catering for the Academy Hotel this morning. There is no contract yet so things could definitely change but... we are looking at having a potato, soup, and salad bar for dinner at the reception. We thought it was appropriate in a fall wedding. We may also serve ham with it. Also, we will probably have a chocolate fountain which I am really excited about! :) Those are always a big hit at the weddings I have attended. The one thing I really didn't care for at the Academy Hotel was the centerpieces they put on the tables, so we will have to adjust those! Everything else seems to be set up pretty nicely. If we block 10 rooms for guests, they can get the rooms for $69.00 a night, which includes a full breakfast in the morning.

Quirky Houses

There are so many quirky little things to learn about a new house... and I can't help but compare it to the one I moved from.

Perks about the new house-
-The mail arrives before noon instead of 5:00 in the evening.
-You could fit two living rooms from the old house into the living room at the new house.
-There is a perfect place for Chloey's litter box.
-It stays cool without an air conditioner because of all the mature trees on and around the property.
-It's only two minutes from downtown.
-There is a drive-in ice cream shop and a grocery store less than two blocks away. It actually takes less time to walk to them then to get in the car and drive.
-There is a black squirrel who has been spotted no less than 5 times by either Nathan or I who loves to play on the roof and provides entertainment (and possibly frustration) for Chloey who is stuck inside and cannot "play" with it.
-There is a guest room- so everybody come and visit!!!
-Cell phone reception in the house is FANTASTIC- the best ever.
-There are lots of places to sit outside- a front and back porch.

Perks about the old house-
-I had internet access (hopefully that will be true of this place soon as well!)
-You could fit two of the bedrooms in the new place into one bedroom at the old place.
-It had air conditioning.
-It's only 10 minutes from work, now I have to drive at least 20.
-My hairdresser and a great seafood restaurant were only 2 minutes away.
-There was a covered carport.
-There was a pool, which I miss terribly!

Drawbacks about the new place-
-The cupboards are so high that I actually had to buy a stepladder in order to put anything in them...and I have to use the stepladder every day.
-There is carpet in the dining area. I am not a fan.
-It's set far back from the road and it gets really dark at night back there so it can be kind of creepy.
-It takes a long time for the water in the faucets to get hot.
-There is a VERY stubborn spider who insists on rebuilding his web on the doorknob of the shed, no matter how many times I destroy it with the broom.

All in all, it has been a fair trade!

Reading Together

If you've never read a book with your loved one, I would highly recommend it. When I was a little girl, my mom would always read out loud to my sisters and me, even as we grew "too old" for it. My favorite book that she read aloud was A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle and that was when I was a pre-teen. I know Andie and Kate both enjoyed the Lord of the Rings books being read to them even as late in life as high school. In my current profession, it's obvious that I would be an advocate for reading aloud at all ages (or reading silently or listening to CDs on books, or doing whatever it takes to enjoy literature)!

Nathan and I read books together. It has been a terrific way to bond and it gives us a lot to talk about. When I see couples together in restaurants who sit and silently eat their food without engaging in conversation with one another, I have begun to think how it would be great if they read a book together. It would give them something to discuss at the dinner table and maybe they wouldn't look so bored with one another! (But, I dare not judge- that could be us in a couple of years!)

The most recent book Nathan and I read together was called The Father Factor by Stephen Poulter. This is a great book for anybody searching for their calling in life. It discusses how your father and his parenting style may have (or most definitely) influenced your drive and passions in your career. It was really interesting.

My favorite experience reading a book with Nathan was when we read Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson. This is a children's book and we began reading it shortly after the movie came out. One Saturday, his cousins called to invite us to see the movie with them later that afternoon. I wanted Nathan to finish the book before we saw it, so we spent the next couple of hours reading. (SPOILER ALERT!!!) I was the unfortunate soul who was reading out loud during the scene when Jesse finds out that Leslie has died. I could barely make it through, just like every other time I've read the book. To protect his 'bad-ass' image (hee, hee!), I won't reveal Nathan's reaction to the story. :)

Thanks for all the great advice! Keep it coming. I am more excited to go back to the stores and finish the process after hearing from you girls! :)

When Nathan and I got engaged we thought that six months was a short engagement. Since that day, we have two couple-friends who have gotten engaged and are getting married before us! I guess it's true, you really can plan a wedding in whatever time you give yourself. When I think of those friends, it helps me realize that I really should be able to get it all done.

Registering

Nathan and I registered today. More accurately...Today Nathan and I BEGAN the process that is "registering." We registered (possibly, unnecessarily) at two different stores- Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond. The contrast of the experience at the two stores was surprising.

We started at Target and the lovely people who worked there had the general attitude of..."here's what you need, here's how you do it, have fun!" And it was fun!! We walked around scanning the items we wanted without anybody else's input and we laughed a lot and worried only a little.

Then, we went to Bed, Bath and Beyond. One of the first things we were told when we arrived was that this was a process that would take 5-6 hours. Unfortunately, that process started with Natalia sitting us down and slowly going page by page through a magazine of the items in the store that we really MUST own. She had personal anecdotes illustrating the importance of owning the high quality merchandise at their store. And... if we already had them, even if they worked well, this would definitely be the time to upgrade and get better things. During this 45 minute "introduction" to the process of registering at Bed, Bath and Beyond, it was mentioned that for every invitation we are planning to send out, we really should register for 2-3 times as many items. Natalia also mentioned the importance of owning china (which, contrary to popular belief, is actually much more durable than any other dishes). We filled out a form by hand, which the sales lady then entered into the computer during which time we were instructed to decide on which china pattern we could both agree on. I called my mom, instead. (Not because I wanted her advice on which china to register for, but because I really had no intention of registering for china at all and wanted more practical advice.)

The next 2 hours (no, we did not spend the suggested 5-6 hours looking) Nathan and I wandered aimlessly around while three different attendants continuously checked in with us, even offering us water bottles (for endurance, perhaps) at one point. We were often reminded not to forget the china. Because the cost of the items at Bed, Bath and Beyond were higher, I think Nathan and I were more reluctant to register for as many of the things we wanted there. Some of them just seemed too pricey. It's hard not to worry about asking too much of people by putting what we consider to be expensive items on the registry. We finally had to stop for the day, knowing that we would need to do more registering, but that most of it would probably happen back at good ol' Target!

For those of you out there who have been through this, if you have any recommendations on what is practical and useful that we should include in our registry, we would welcome the suggestions... And if we really DO need china, please let us know.

Still Moving

While the majority of the moving work is complete, there are still some big concerns. For example, the Realtor has not yet removed the lock box from the front door of the house even though I have been living there for almost two weeks now, and we have called him twice. This makes me nervous because all of my belongings are in the home and with the press of two buttons, anybody can grab the key and enter the house. Also, we have a garbage disposal that does not work and an outlet that is needed for cable and internet hookup that is not working as well. Considering the tardiness of the key lock removal, I am not holding my breath that these things will be taken care of in a timely manner. I hate moving! :)

My family is coming to visit in a couple of weeks and my sister (Andie, the honor attendant) wants to have a bridal shower for me while she is here. That would be a fun time to show off the new home! Despite some issues, I still love the place.

Moving

Life has been on hold for the last week while I have been moving. It is hard work. I must have made 20 or so trips from the old house to the new with all my belongings. The only good thing I can say about it is that it provides motivation to reduce the number of belongings by giving them all away! I have a huge pile that will be delivered to Goodwill shortly.

On the wedding front, I finally ordered the ladies' bridesmaids dresses today. The official color of the dress is 'truffle.' They will arrive on August 13 and then I will send them out.

I'll write more later when I finally have internet at my own home!
